if the contract is for one year or more should make a written agreement and registerd, but it happend now
any way you find his ID particulars and ask him to return balance check, if not returned, you simply go to police station and report regarding this guy, the rest they will do , you will get all your checks back

so long as no contract/agreement with you, your checks are safe, he should give you back
