ok ... so i am coming in really late on this topic... BUT...
this is my opinion so do not lash out at me this is just my opinion and i have the right to have one...
i have a local friend here who is qatari and extremly nice... he takes me to places in this country and shows me things to do... and we talk politics and discuss the different cultural differences...
so far i have learned that the reason why americans (i can not speak for other foreigners because i am from america) tend to be afraid of qataris (muslims in general) is because of there lack of understanding...
my friend and i talked alot about how it used to be in qatar before 9-11 and he says before 9-11 and for about 1 year after americans and qataris talked and hung out all the time...
he said over the last few years when new americans come to qatar they are afraid to talk to them (then he laughed and said until i me you).
well we tried to understand it and finally came to the conclusion that it is lack of understanding on the americans part... because most americans associate muslims with terrorists even though there is no such connection... because the muslim culture is so passive and polite that its hard to even understand how people such as binladin can call them selves muslims... because he and his followers do not act in the muslim traditions...
so with all that said the reason why americans that are recently going over seas and are afraid to talk to some one here is because of their lack of understanding what is really going on because they watch to damn much TV...
even my family freaked out when i told them one of my good friends was a muslim... i will not even began to tell you some of the dumn things my own family said... so in closing
I will speak for everyone i know... we are sorry for not understanding our culture... but please give us your time and patients and we will be your friend because that is the american way
