you need to make sure it's not "Operator" locked, that way it will work with any SIM. If you want to get a contract phone in UK (due to the obvious price advantage) then there are 'unofficial' means to unlock an iphone , but they void your warranty and cause problems with some phones (at least when i tried them, maybe they're better now).
