Girish Puthenchery passed away
Kozhikode: Popular Malayalam film lyricist Girish Puthenchery died at a private hospital here on Wednesday night following a cererbal haemorrhage, hospital sources said. The last rites will be held at Mavoor Road at about 4 in the evening. The body will be brought to the Kozhikode Town Hall from his ancesteral home at about 12 noon for the public to pay their last respects.
Puthenchery (48), admitted to the hospital a week back, was on ventilator support and the end came at around 2125
hours today, they said.
Rated on par with legendary lyricist P Bhaskaran and O N V Kurup, Puthenchery won the State award seven times for his
lyrics in about 400 films in a over two decade career.
Penning his first lyrics in 1990 for 'Enquiry' he became a household name for Keralites all over the world for his hit
songs in blockbuster movies like 'Ravana Prabhu', 'Nandanam', 'Vadakkum Nathan' and 'Ore Kadal'.
He also found a enviable staturein the Malayalam film industry as a story teller.
Popular playback singer K J Yesudas, who rendered many of Puthenchery's songs, said he was at a loss for words on
hearing the news.'I am more worried about his bereaved family, rather than speaking about his poetic genius,' he said.
Girish hailed from Puthenchery village in Kozhikode district. Puthenchery (48) is survied by his wife, a daughter and a
son.
Sources at MIMS hospital, where he was admitted on Feb 6 following cerebral haemorrhage,said he twice underwent surgery
before being put on ventilator. His condition worsened later this evening and he passed away at around 2130 hrs, they said.
Puthenchery's body was taken to his residence here tonight and will be taken to the town hall tomorrow from his ancestral
home at Puthenchery near here.
His mortal remains will be cremated tomorrow evening, family sources said.
A pall of gloom descended on the Malayalam film industry as the fraternity is still coming to grips with the loss of
villain turned comedian 'Kochin' Haneefa earlier this month.
