HH The Amir to meet King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in December
Qatar’s Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will pay a state visit to Great Britain in December, Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host the Amir and his consort, Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad Al Thani, at the Buckingham Palace during the two-day visit on December 3 and 4, the statement said.
King Charles, 75, has visited Qatar on eight occasions between 1986 and 2015. The two leaders’ most recent meeting was in December 2023, during the UN COP28 summit in Dubai, UAE.
HH The Amir and Sheikha Jawaher had attended King Charles III’s coronation in May 2023.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met HH The Amir during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Downing Street said after the meeting that the two leaders had ‘pledged to build on the existing partnership, particularly in areas of mutual opportunity, including education, business and energy.’
They also met in Qatar last year when Starmer was leader of the opposition.
London is seeking a trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council, of which Qatar is a member. The government says a deal could boost the UK economy by some £1.6bn and open up lucrative markets to British firms.
Qatari investment in the UK economy is estimated to be worth more than £40bn. In 2022, Qatar said it was committed to investing up to another £10bn in Britain by 2027.
