I found this posted by @driverinqatar.. . my husband and I also want to do this trip also

"Hi there Qatari reddittors, Here is my writeup/experience on road tripping between Qatar and UAE.

TL;DR

1- Get UAE Visa (GDRFA Dubai site)

2- a Car in your name and valid driving license, alternatively a none objection letter to drive the car

3- Obtain border crossing Visa for KSA from approved agency (around 550-600 Qar)

4- Negative PCR test

The Road

5- Drive to border in Salwa, around 3 gates and you are in the DMZ

6- Saudi border side, first passport and immigration, then customs, then obtain car insurance for Saudi then you are inside Saudi arabia (time depends on how crowded every station is, but very fast)

7- Drive to Saudi-UAE border in al Batha, Passport and Immigration, the customs then to the UAE side

8- Inside UAE border, passport and immigration then customs then insurance for UAE (very fast overall )

9- on the way back it's the same, passport and immigration then customs then insurance and out to the next border (customs in qatar will take more time)

The long version

1- Obtain transit visa from approved agency ( I used بيارق الريان للسفر والسياحة). for this you need

a)- Valid passport with two empty pages, valid for 6 months at least

b) Letter from Qatari sponsor or employment letter - company name must be in arabic, signed with pen (no scan or colored photocopy), stamped by company - Ask the agency for the format because it is addressed to KSA council

c) Visit Qatar Commerce Chamber to verify the signature, pay 50qar (provide: passport photo, signed employment letter, qid photo, computer card, company commercial record)

b) stamp employment letter from ministry of interior via a Government Services Complex (i went to Al-Rayyan )

2- Vehicle registration card. the vehicle must be registered in the driver name

3- Two passport photos taken from the front on white background

4- Valid Qatar ID

5- Vaccination certificate.

6- picture of the car license front or back taken by phone camera with good angel that shows the plate number for KSA customs

7- UAE Visa

a) visit GDRFA dubai site https://smart.gdrfad.gov.ae/ , go to gcc entry permit, fill the application, then pay and submit (took me less than 1 hour) - some information are dummy information like sponsor and it will reflect in the visa as dummy sponsor.

8- Obtain a negative PCR test - valid for 72 hours usually, make sure of the fast changes in this area

9- pay 550qar to submit the application with the agency

10- should take less than 4 working days to get the visa stamped on your passport

No Need to get car insurance for UAE from Qatar (it was faster to get it from UAE border than here in Doha!) costs about about 210AED for 15 days , in Saudi border you can purchase 1 week insurance for 138 SAR at Najm gates (Qatari Debit card works at Saudi Najm gates)

Boarder crossing Qatar-KSA

Qatar side

1- first gate you will get a paper

2- submit it to second gate along with passport

3- third gate they check docs and send you on the way to DMZ

Saudi Side

1- first stop is passport and immigration (thumbprints/pictures)

2- second stop is customs

3- third stop is Najm insurance gates (138SAR for 1 week insurance)

You are now inside the beautiful Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Boarder crossing KSA-UAE

Saudi Side

1- first stop is immigration and passport checking

2- second stop is customs

3- drive to the UAE border

UAE Side

1- passport and immigration quick stop

2- customs stop

3- car insurance quick stop

Enjoy driving the speed limit in the amazing UAE 160kmh until inside Abu Dhabi (around 440km) then it's 140 until inside Dubai

Without stopping for landscape sceneries or petrol stations it takes about 7 hours with moderate traffic in borders

The road back is almost easier, Its fast in the UAE 160kmh and 120kmh from UAE-KSA border until inside Doha :'(

Borders are the same (Passport and immigration then customs then insurance or to the next destination)"
