For those of you looking to engage in some interesting activities focused on creative writing, social media or music appreciation, the Qatar National Library (QNL) has announced a host of events in August that you may like to join in.

The library will hold regular book club and skills workshops throughout August, allowing visitors to enrich their knowledge and meet new people.

Starting on August 3, a talk titled ‘The Qatari Experience Abroad’ will connect visitors to a group of Qataris who will speak about their experience of living abroad, the challenges they had to face, and how they overcame those issues.

The session will be delivered in English and Arabic and will also touch on how the library’s vast resources can assist anyone interested in living abroad.

“Book Discussion: Siblings with Special Needs” on August 7 will feature a discussion on Special Brothers and Sisters, by Monica McCaffrey and Annette Hames.

The book is a compilation of the real-life experiences of children who grew up with a sibling with disabilities.

The stories are honest reflections of their feelings of love, frustration, joy, and sadness. The book is also available on eBook Central, which is one of the library’s numerous online resources. The discussion will be hosted in the Assistive Technology Room.

On August 24 a creative team-building activity, “Building with Bricks Challenge” will take place with groups of five to seven participants.

This activity is for children aged 16 and above who will work together to build an architectural structure of their design using Lego bricks.

Additionally, on August 17 onward a series of Arabic creative writing workshops will kick-off at the library, presented in collaboration with Radhi al-Hajri, founder of Zekreet Publishing and Distribution.

The sessions will hone the creative writing skills of ambitious writers in a bid to support local literature.

The workshops will be open to adults every Saturday until September 7.

QNL will organize a screening of Symphony No. 9, "From the New World” by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak on August 19. The event will highlight the power of music to express powerful emotions under the theme “Homesickness in Classical Music.”

The Readers and Opinions Book Club meeting on August 29 will discuss an autobiographical work, 'I Saw Ramallah', by Mourid Barghouthi.

An “Introduction to Google Drive” skills workshop on August 24 will offer insights into one of today’s leading cloud computing tools to the participants.

The “Social Media Self-Marketing Skills” workshop on August 31 will teach attendees ways to effectively use social media as a tool for marketing themselves and using social media to tell stories and connect with different communities.
