WATCH: Top mistakes every job seeker should avoid
Job seeking is all about being cautious with every step!
When you are searching for a job, you must be mindful to keep your resume, cover letter, or email error-free. In today’s highly competitive job market, even one typo may become the reason you lose an opportunity.
However, you can take charge of the process by following a few simple strategies which will increase your chances of landing an interview and eventually getting that job!
Below are some of the most common job seeker mistakes to avoid:
1. Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors
Proofread your resume, cover letter, and emails before sending out to the employers. Errors on your resume give a bad impression to the employer. The employer might think you do not pay attention to details.
You can also get your resume checked by a professional.
2. Too much information on your resume
You do not have to put together everything you have done since your college life. You can be selective and put only the most important and recent experiences. Avoid putting up your high school grades or listing up your hobbies in your resume.
You only get a few seconds to grab the attention of the employer, so make sure you show your best experiences.
3. Writing a long cover letter
The hiring manager is looking for your skills and what you can offer the company. Avoid including your personal reasons or family situations to explain why you want the job.
A compelling cover letter lets the hiring manager know why you are the right fit for the position.
4. Job description and qualifications do not match
Before applying for a position, make sure your qualifications match with the job description.
5. Not listing references
You must have your references from your university or previous workplace ready. You can provide them to the employer right away when requested.
6. Not dressing up professionally for the interview
It’s very important to dress up professionally for an interview but, keep in mind you are not overdressed. What you wear for your interview makes the first impression in front of your employer.
A tip for female jobseekers is to avoid wearing too many accessories and go easy on the make-up.
7. During the interview
The interview should be all about what you can offer the company if you are selected for the role. Talk about the skills and qualifications which make you the perfect match for the position.
8. Not following up
You can follow up at least a week after the interview. Following up gives another chance to make an impression on the employers. You can follow-up by writing a thank you email or via a phone call.

totally agree with your comment
I am afraid this is not going to help land a good job in Qatar. Maybe it will work elsewhere, but not in Qatar. Even with all 8 steps (which are available in many interview sites on the Internet), it is extremely difficult to land a good job here and nearly impossible if you are from a so-called third-world country. Qatar job market works differently and full of discrimination based on nationality. Apparently, hardly any process is followed as far as my experience in Qatar goes. Please correct me if I am wrong. I would appreciate if you could shed at least some light on the middle-east job market.
