Qatar’s art scene has been thriving beyond measure.

A number of distinguished international and local artists have showcased some of their exquisite artworks in the country in the recent past.

In the latest offering of exquisite artwork on display, Kazimir Malevich’s exhibition, featuring more than 100 pieces from the collection of the State Russian Museum, has opened at the Fire Station Garage Gallery, reported Gulf Times.

Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums (QM), attended the opening of the exhibition ‘Kazmir Malevich: Genius of the Russian Avant-garde.’

Kazimir Malevich was a Russian artist and art theorist, whose pioneering work and writing had a profound influence on the development of non-objective and abstract art in the 20th century.

The opening ceremony also saw in attendance Dr Vladimir Gusev, Director of the State Russian Museum, Dr Evgenia Petrova, Deputy Director of the State Russian Museum and Curator of the exhibition, and Joseph Kiblitsky, Publisher of the catalog and Co-curator, as well as some other VIPs and dignitaries.

The exhibition, which runs until May 31, allows visitors to look into the works of an influential innovator of the last century, whose ‘Suprematism’ movement continues to inspire many artists and architects around the globe, reported The Peninsula.

The Malevich showcase complements the 'Russian Avant-garde: Pioneers and Direct Descendants' exhibition held at the Fire Station last year, Director of Exhibitions at Qatar Museums, Sheikha Reem Al Thani said, adding that visitors who were inspired by these remarkable works can now take a more nuanced look into an originator of the movement.

"We have worked very closely with colleagues from the State Russian Museum, whom we thank for the chance to bring masterpieces by Malevich to the region for the first time,” Al Thani mentioned.

The exhibition is able to track the evolution of Malevich’s art – from the earliest period of a realistic and symbolist nature through to his later work created one year before his passing.

Several of his most famous paintings, including ‘Red Square’ and costumes from his opera ‘Victory Over the Sun’, are on display at the Fire Station.

“One of Kazimir Malevich’s greatest hopes for his art and artistic endeavors was to organize exhibitions abroad and I am so pleased we are able to continue doing so, bringing his mastery to new audiences in the region,” Dr Petrova commented, according to Qatar Tribune.

Malevich’s exploration of forms evolved against the background of radical changes in art and society both in Russia and the international scene.

The exhibition at Fire Station features for the first-time examples of work from his entire career, including early decorative sketches and poster designs, Cubist and Futurist paintings, ceramic works, and architectural sculptures.

The exhibition was first envisioned as part of the Qatar-Russia 2018 Year of Culture and will be an opportunity for local audiences to continue exploring the richness of Russian art.
