Being employed in a country filled with skyscrapers and tourist attractions can be draining money-wise. You will feel tempted to visit new places, purchase luxury items and taste different flavours.

For sure, you will not want to empty your pockets in exchange for all the tangible things and experiences. That is why it is crucial to maintain good discipline when it comes to spending your money while enjoying your work in the Gulf.

Here are some tips to help you cut down the costs:

1. Cook your own food

Although the price of food in Qatar is reasonable, indulging yourself in restaurants every day will cost you big time.

Sure, you have spoiled yourself with a delectable meal and dined at an exquisite banquet, but the experience has left you with only a few bucks in your wallet.

Why not cook your food instead to prevent burning a hole in your pocket? Prepare a packed lunch and bring it to your office. Do this about two to three times a week and you will be surprised by the big savings.

Alternatively, you can always look around for restaurants that offer special deals. This way, you still get to please yourself in a fine dining place whilst saving money.

2. Make a shopping list

When shopping, it makes good sense to make a list of to-buy items. Challenge yourself to only purchase the items on your list.

Buy small amounts of fresh and healthy foods weekly rather than storing large volumes of junk and processed foods.

This tip may not be easy but it will help you save time, money and above all—calories. It prevents you from impulse buying, overspending and gaining unnecessary weight. It likewise eliminates the idea of freezing leftovers and throwing food away.

Not only that. Having a shopping list with you will save your from stress. You will be able to complete your groceries and valuables at home without feeling any guilt.

3. Limit leisure activities

While it is true that working in a rich country like Qatar provides you with financial comfort, you must still be cautious about spending your money.

Try to regulate leisure activities that cost. Limit your eat outs, travels and exploration in the region. Avoid taking side trips to tourist destinations too often.

It also helps to control yourself when it comes to partying and buying new gadgets, clothes, shoes or any other expensive stuff. These things might only add to your bills and expenditures. So save up first, then have fun later.

Be extra wary with your spending. Budget carefully on how much you will spend on food, transportation and other necessities.

4. Look out for big discounts

If you really can’t stop yourself from spending money on your wants and interests, keep an eye for big deals and discounts in Qatar.

Don’t hit the high street shops, restaurants and hotels just because you feel like doing so. Why not wait for the holidays like Ramadan and Eid? In seasons like this, some goods tend to cost less than usual.

You can likewise look out for shops that offer sales and promotions every now and then. But wait! Make sure that you don’t let yourself be deceived. Keep in mind that your priority is to save money not to spend more money.

Before you go ahead to the checkout with any purchase, ask yourself the question ‘Do I need this?’ If no is the answer, but your mind shouts yes, the best thing to do is to place the item back on the rack.
