‘Skate Girls of Kabul’ exhibition brings a new perspective on education and empowerment
Award-winning photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson has taken a series of striking photographs of Afghan girls who took up skateboarding as part of a programme by Skateistan—an international charity organisation. Presented by Qatar Museums (QM), the series—aptly called ‘Skate Girls of Kabul’—is on display at Katara Cultural Village.
The exhibition is open till Saturday, the 21st of October at Qatar Museums' (QM) gallery in Katara Cultural Village, building 10.
A skating ramp installed at the exhibition allows visitors to try their hand at skateboarding with skateboards and helmets made available to guests.
Skateistan is an award-winning international non-profit organisation and Afghan charity that provides skate parks as a motivator to get children from disadvantaged families back into the educational system. The charity’s aim is “empowering youth through skateboarding and education”.
‘Skate Girls of Kabul’ features Afghan girls between the ages of five and twenty-five participating in Skateistan’s programme. The photographs bring to life the vibrant spirit of these young girls, bringing a new perspective and dimension to skateboarding culture.
Jessica’s work was viewed by more than 74,000 visitors during its two-week run at London’s Saatchi Gallery. She began work as a portrait photographer in 2000. Her photographs have since been published in newspapers and magazines worldwide, including the Telegraph Magazine and British Vogue, as well as being exhibited in New York, London and Prague.
