Have you been bitten by the 'geek collector' bug yet?
Shaun Myburg
Being a geek collector in Qatar is not easy. However, any true toy collector will tell you that a big part of the charm is in the chase.
The last few months have undoubtedly seen a welcome rise in the availability of pop culture merchandise in the country.
Pop culture itself has most certainly had a love-hate relationship within Qatar as it navigates the slippery slope of what’s socially acceptable. (The recent ban of DC Comics latest superhero film Wonder Woman being evidence of that.)
Gone are the days of just collecting comics books or trading cards, now collectors live by motto of ‘He who dies with the most toys wins.’
With the global popularity of Funko’s Pop! Vinyl figures line, collectors have an endless supply of popular characters to collect.
From the eternally popular Star Wars, to the superstars of the WWE, and endless supply of superheroes and icons from film and TV, the 4-inch-tall figures have become the must-have item for collectors. As new lines are being released monthly, it’s clear that it’s better to start collecting now rather than later.
With the opening of recent establishments such as Doha Comics, located in The Pearl, and a local chain of the popular UK franchise, HMV, now open in the new Al Mirqab mall, there is no shortage of vendors. Previously chains such as Virgin Megastore and Saqr where the only options available to collectors with their somewhat limited supplies.
So whether you’re a die-hard collector, or just looking for the perfect gift for a fan, Funko Pop! Vinyls are here to stay.
These are surely cool to collect. I just started my One Piece collection.
