The wait is finally over, Doha Festival City opens doors to the public
The Doha Festival City (DFC), Qatar’s largest entertainment, retail and dining destination, has officially opened to the public.
In a cool opening ceremony, the mall, which was built at a cost of QR6.5bn and spread out over a total area of 433,000sqm, was declared open. The mall expects to welcome around 20 million visitors every year, according to Trade Arabia.
“This is a proud moment for all those who have supported the scheme over the last six years,” said Kareem Shamma, Chief Executive Officer of the Bawabat Al Shamal Real Estate Company (BASREC), which owns DFC.
BARSEC itself is a joint venture between Dubai-based Al Futtaim Real Estate Services, Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), Aqar Real Estate Investment Company and a private Qatari investor.
The stunning mixed-use development that house more than 500 retail units including leading international and local brands. It will incorporate Qatar’s iconic IKEA store, a full-sized Monoprix hypermarket, Ace hardware store, and a range of other shops.
DFC also boasts of state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor activity areas, including four unique theme parks that are expected to revolutionise mall entertainment.
While ‘Juniverse’ harnesses the power of dynamic learning to inspire, educate and entertain, ‘Virtoucity’ will merge the virtual world with reality to deliver an immersive digital experience.
Snow Dunes will be Qatar’s first indoor snow park themed around a fantastical Arabian town set in the distant past.
Angry Birds, the global gaming sensation and Hollywood blockbuster movie will also be launching its first theme park in the region at the mall.
VOX Cinemas will offer 18 digital screens including four exclusive new concepts — 4DX, Theatre by Rhodes, MAX and VOX Kids.
The mall's centre court will have an art installation created by visionary artist and sculptor David Harber. The sculpture, Torus, is 4M in diameter.
He will also produce a 4M bronze ‘Keystone Ring’ with a Verdigris finish to be located outside one of the main entrances to the mall.

Thank goodness for that.. this saga was dragging on longer than a bad TV serial..
