Traffic movement through Al Rayyan area has been a nightmare in recent times.

The ongoing development of the 45km Al Rayyan-Dukhan Corridor got a major boost with the opening of two key interchanges yesterday.

The first interchange is located between Al Shafi Street and Al Rayyan Road and the second between Al Qalaa (Fort) Street and Al Rayyan Road, reported Gulf Times.

It is expected to drastically reduce traffic congestion on Al Qalaa Street and in the commercial areas of Al Shafi Street in Al Rayyan.

The first phase of the QR1.2bn Al Rayyan Road Upgrade project, which is expected to cut travel time by up to 30%, was opened almost two months ahead of schedule, reported The Peninsula.

The newly-opened road also comprises of a 7.4km pedestrian path and 5.3km bicycle lane.

Minister of Transport and Communications HE Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti, Minister of Municipality and Environment (MME) HE Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi and President of Public Works Authority (Ashghal) Eng Saad bin Ahmed Al Muhannadi attended the opening ceremony.

“The new road will ensure a smooth flow of traffic until the completion of the remaining phases. The work is continuing at a faster pace on the remaining phases. The project has achieved significant progress and will be completed before deadline,” Al Sulaiti told Qatar Tribune.

The two multilevel interchanges, which include two underpasses, will provide continuous traffic movement along Al Rayyan Road to facilitate the flow of vehicles to and from Al Rayyan Road and from the surrounding areas.

Service tunnels, five kilometres of storm-water drainage networks, treated sewage effluent (TSE) and sewage networks and street lighting poles are the project’s other highlights.
