Breaking down breast cancer awareness month
October is breast cancer awareness month, and all of Doha and social media is overloaded with lots of information, campaigns, lunches and all sorts of other events. Sometimes, too much information can be overwhelming and hence, we are going to break it down for you.
What?
Breast cancer awareness is the prime purpose behind pink month or breast cancer awareness month. The first known use of a pink ribbon in connection with breast cancer awareness was in 1991, when pink ribbons were handed our to participants of a race for breast cancer survivors in New York. As we step into the month, several campaigns and initiatives are taking place all over Qatar not just for awareness but also promoting early detection, which is key to survival.
When and Where?
Oct 1 – 17 – Gulf Mall and Ezdan Mall will have information and awareness booths.
Oct 1 - 31 - Pink Afternoon Tea, Lobby Lounge, Intercontinental Doha The City
Oct 2 – 31 – Hamad Medical Corporation is conducting awareness campaigns. Visit https://www.hamad.qa/EN/All-Events/bcam/calender_event/Pages/default.aspx for the complete list of events happening through the month.
Oct 8 – Al Khor Housing Community will have a lecture on the importance of early detection.
Oct 15 – Qatar National Library will have a presentation on spreading awareness at the student center.
Oct 16 – 31 – Villaggio Mall and Landmark Mall will have information and awareness booths.
Oct 21 – Pink Brunch, The Square, Intercontinental Doha The City
Oct 28 – 29 – Qatar Cancer Society will have a two-day conference on the disease and its prevention.
Why?
According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year and affecting countries at all levels of modernization. The key to survival is early detection and according to statistics, survival rate is nearly 100% when detected at an early stage.
How?
Screen for Life – Free screenings are being offered around Doha for women between the ages 45-69. This program is conducted by Qatar’s National Cancer Program and is being led by the Primary Health Care Corporation.
Screenings are conducted at healthcare centres in Al Wakra, Leabaib and Rawdat Al Khail. A mobile mammogram-screening unit is also available.

Shereen, Thanks for bringing it up for us ...... the QLers ........ '' promoting early detection '' ..... We need to read these 3 words over & over ......... because the key is hidden in these 3 words ........ We need to explore the area to detect any un-usual stuff here & there ..........
