You are never too old to return to school
Remember the carefree days of yore when getting good grades was the only thing you had to worry about? Studies were the top priority, mainly for parents. And no matter how much we resisted some aspects of the academic scenario, one things rings true. “It will pay off when you’re older”.
This adage was hammered into us day in and day out by parents and teachers. We groaned and moaned then, but realized the truth later. I have had the chance of knowing many schoolfellows who dreaded studying. But bumping into them years later, adulthood seems to have altered their views on that. They have jobs and are striving towards success in all areas of life, and most of them want to pursue further studies.
Many adults go through a transition phase when they consider changing their career or opting for a new one altogether, or they want to pursue a certain interest for personal development. The reasons vary from person to person. If you have decided to pursue further studies in Qatar or abroad, consider these important factors before starting.
-Time management. Be prepared to commit fully to the program. Prioritize your most important areas of life and don’t compromise on them.
-Get your finances in order. Studies require time and money. Be sure you have enough cushion to land on after registering for a program. Consider student loans that aid your decision.
-Do your research. Don’t enroll in the first university you see. Do your homework and make a list of all colleges that include your choice of subjects. Read up and gather as much information as you can about them. Contact people who have studied there and ask relevant questions about all pros and cons weighing in your mind.
-Depending on the subject, decide if you can go to full time or part time, or even study online.
-Have your transcripts and documents in order when registering.
-Create a quiet space in your home to study and complete assignments. Fix certain times during the day when you can commit to studying without any interruptions. Ask your family or people living around you for their support in achieving this goal.
-Have realistic expectations. You will encounter stress, which is faced by students of all ages. Find coping mechanisms like meditation or exercise to calm yourself.
-You may have to discipline yourself into cutting back some activities you normally enjoy. Stay focused and remember, it will pay off.
