MoI announces three-month amnesty for illegal residents

People who lack valid credentials and live in Qatar as illegal residents will be given a three-month amnesty period to leave without any legal consequences, the Ministry of Interior has announced.

The amnesty, which will be in force from September 1 to December 1, is only the third such instance in Qatar. This is the first time in 12 years an amnesty is being initialized, reported Gulf Times.

Foreigners who are residing in the country in violation of the provisions of Law No. 4 of 2009 Regulating the Entry, Exit, Residence and Sponsorship of Expatriates can exit the country without legal consequences, the MoI said in a post on social media.

“Illegal residents should contact the Search and Follow up Department to complete the exit procedures during the grace period,” it said.

About 6,000 illegal residents had availed the scheme in the first three months between March 21 and June 20 during the last amnesty announced in 2004.

Most of the people who are overstaying their visa periods in Qatar are reported to be doing odd jobs in the country to make a living, and some of them are said to be able to save small amounts of money to be sent home for the sustenance of their family members.

karoly: It is rather strange. People are willing to suffer hardships and do meanial jobs here , whereas they wouldn't consider the same back home

One think defies my logic - how people manage to stay here illegally. ID card is required for everything including medical services, renting an accommodation and sending money abroad. And why they want to do it? In India, for example, there are ample jobs available and in some places like Kerala businesses are closing down just for lack of staff. If these guys can manage to eke out a living here without even an ID they can be millionaires under more favorable circumstances, I believe.

In order to change sponsor, you need to have an original sponsor and a new job..

Fine those who provided the original visa
