Qatar residents finding it increasingly hard to follow Rio Olympics

The quadrennial Olympic Games may happen only once every four years, but how much excitement it has been able to drum up among Qatari audience is a debatable topic.

One of the main issues that have dampened enthusiasm among followers is the big six-hour time difference between the two countries. After a heavy day of work, more people are preferring to sleep rather than sit up and watch the Games.

Gulf Times, which talked to a Peruvian national working at a five star hotel in Doha, reported that she was not even aware the Games had started.

“I think a lot of people like me are too busy with work and have no time to watch the Games at night or early morning except for football,” she said.

A number of expatriates said they wanted to follow the Games, but found that the schedule of matches does not go well with their free time. Most matches happen at dawn or early morning, when it is time for them to report to work.

Leandro Cardoso Feliciano, a Brazilian living in Qatar, said his community members were not able to gather together to watch the Games as their schedules often did not match with the Games.

Posting rubbish at a social website is also more important to some people as it does not complete their day's mission if they have not done so several times during a day. .
