The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa is hosting its debut Ramadan in Doha this year, and QL was delighted to be a part of it. We arrived for the Suhoor at Westin Doha’s Ramadan tent that has been set up in its Westin Grand Ballroom. The first impression of Westin Doha is a classy flair mixed with elegance. The Suhoor tables were already spread before 9PM and a steady flow of people kept streaming in till the tent was quite full. The atmosphere was subdued yet lively, imparting a pure Arabic essence to the whole affair. Red and white was the theme of the tent, its corners decorated in beautiful white drapes over divans and colorful chairs. The touch of traditional Arabia was enhanced by the live Arabic music being sung and strummed out by musicians throughout the event.

The lavish collection of cuisines located throughout the tent was irresistible. For starters, the Khamsin boat was loaded with fresh fruits and culinary goods.

 A word of advice to those who wish to attend this Suhoor, take a walk around the tent first and check out the various live cooking stations and buffet tables. Once you have an idea of the choice in front of you, deciding will be easier. There is certainly everything for everyone. We opted for the Thai soup station first. The Tom Yum was fragrant with Thai spices and spiky flavor, a good start. The pasta cooking station was right next to the Thai soup stand.

 

The mezzeh table was well stocked with the most popular Arabic salads, cheese varieties and dips. Pasta had been my main course itinerary, but I ended up having biryani instead. You can well imagine the dilemma of having to choose between so many goodies.

The sweets section was divided into three tables. One corner was dedicated to chocolate indulgence, with the chocolate fountain in the middle, fruits and marshmallows lying invitingly next to it.

The other two tables had Arabic desserts and international desserts respectively.  A nibble of baklava was in order and then there was this array of cheesecakes, cakes, tarts, caramel flan, and Um Ali to choose from. The pasta chef was very helpful and even gave us tips on how to make classic Um Ali. We savored the warm, creamy dessert, and then it was time to leave.

Suhoor at Westin Doha Hotel is an affair to remember.  Once you enter the tent you’ll find yourself mesmerized by the dreamlike mood and slow, rhythmic Arabic music, matched equally with savory cuisine.
