A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced an Arab expatriate to six months in jail and subsequent deportation for an attempted theft from duty-free shops at Hamad International Airport (HIA) while in an inebriated state.

Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported that the man was convicted of trying to steal a number of goods from duty-free stores after consuming alcohol. He failed in his attempt after being spotted by a salesman there.

According to the police report, the salesman saw some items falling from the defendant's bag as he was walking across the duty-free area. He was stopped on suspicion of foul play and checked.

The items found included a pair of glasses worth QR3,531, a pair of sunglasses worth QR1,595, earphones worth QR999 and other goods such as a cloth puppet, three fancy pens, a key-chain, rosary, box of chocolates, three perfumes, three chains, four packets of cigarettes, a makeup box and CDs, the report said.

The defendant admitted in court that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Well, there is a lot difference in between a Drunk and a Professional Criminal. A Drunk Person is more dangerous- can drive over a life, kill him/her self & around him, can harm anybody around him...

Law maker/ Implementer/ monitor is more culprit than the consumers. You banned it in Books & Allowed it undercover- you made it AVAILABLE for EVERYONE.... than how the consumers are culprit.

Mufti, Nobody believe that, if you go there once in a year then okay, otherwise you will definitely find it by next day ............ .........

Problem is that drinkers are not guiding their OWN children from the ill effects of alcohol consumption etc ........ so the chain never breaks ..............

People steal even without being under the influence of alcohol. My slipper was stolen in a mosque long ago.

Shafqat, It's the addicts who are the culprits, an addict won't live for a day without the poison ..........

How ever if the employers can ensure that nobody on their pay roll should drink & come to work next day may have an effect on controlling alcohol abuse ......

Why dont the govt Strictly Implement & monitor the Alcohol ban ... which is causing all the problems,

Cause of All the Crimes!!! Dual Standards will takes you nowhere...

We need to see reason behind that , normally most humans won't do the acts for which you will be questioned.

Well...im surprised by the fact that he managed to steal all those and stuff them in his bag...all in an intoxicated manner? Doesn't seem intoxicated case to me, maybe he was in his senses while doing those!

You must understand him, Rizks. His girlfriend wanted to leave him, that's why he started drinking. Then he thought in a last attempt to surprise her with presents, which failed. Have mercy on such a poor guy. Now he has nothing. Pray for him.
