Your Instagram feed will soon undergo some heavy changes!
Anyone who is connected to the internet these days should know all about the photo sharing app Instagram.
The App, which helps you give different ‘filters’ to your photograph to make it look arty and cool and then share among friends, is a huge hit. The app boasts of several million active users.
One of Instagram’s biggest attractions was the chronological way in which posts were arranged. In other words, it lets you decide what you want to see, from who, unlike Facebook. But all that is about to change and things are going to go Facebook style with a similar algorithm.
Like Facebook, Instagram will start using a special algorithm to pick out and choose what it thinks you may want to see. It will start prioritizing those stories and bury others which it thinks you are likely to ignore.
While people argue it will increase your engagement with the app, it will sometimes hide things you may want to see, without you ever knowing about it.
Instagram, on its blog, announced about the algorithm under the header ‘See the Moments You Care About First.’
“As Instagram has grown, it’s become harder to keep up with all the photos and videos people share. This means you often don’t see the posts you might care about the most,” it said in the post.
“To improve your experience, Instagram will soon be ordering the stories by moments it deems worthy of your interest. At the beginning, all the same stories will still appear in your feed… just in a different, algorithm-selected order. Over time, as more changes are rolled out, it’s possible that less-worthy stories will be hidden from your view (much like on Facebook).
The order will be determined by “the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content,” the “timeliness of the post”, and “your relationship with the person posting.” A timestamp will appear with each photo to indicate when it was posted,” it said in the post.
Will Instagram ever be the same again? Only time will tell.
UPDATE: A mass petition has been started online to stop Instagram from adopting an algorith. At the time of writing, there are more that 169,000 supporters for it. Show your support by clicking here: https://www.change.org/p/keep-instagram-chronological
