Qatar weekends used to be Thursday and Friday till 2003
We have just another two days to go for the National Day and here’s another cool fact. Did you know that until 2003, Qatar had its weekends on Thursdays and Fridays?
Friday has always been a holiday in Muslim countries considering the fact that Jummah Prayers take place on that day. Along with Friday, Thursday was also declared as a holiday.
However, due to some reforms in a number of Arab States of the Persian Gulf in 2000’s and 2010’s the weekend was changed into Friday and Saturday.
This change provided for the Muslim offering of Friday prayers and afforded more work days to coincide with the working calendars of international financial markets.
Although, expats who have been used to the Saturday-Sunday weekend might find it a little odd at the start, it doesn’t take long for them to forget that Sunday isn’t a working day for the rest of the world.
In addition to this, did you know that some countries have only “one” day as the weekend? Iran has six working days and only Friday as its weekend! Anybody thinking of moving to Iran?
