Qatar, the wealthiest country in the world, saw 25 “special” telephone numbers being bought for a total of QR 4.1 million last week.

The numbers which were being auctioned off for charity by Ooredoo last week, were bought considering that they are easy to remember and would make the users stand out.

Doha News reports that a total of 37 number were up for grabs during the hour-long auction out of which 25 numbers were sold.

The most expensive phone number was sold for QR760,000 and included the number 5 as well as the digits 7 and zero repeated.

The second-highest was sold for QR665,000 and consisted of 5 and repeats of 6 and zero.

The cheapest number was sold for the opening bid of QR50,000 ($13,763).

Many bidders involved in the auction with gusto only because the proceeds were going for charity.

The highest bidder who was a businessman said that “special numbers” give him “distinction” and help him build relations and improve his business.

Businessman Ibrahim Al Malki  bought four numbers for approximately QR350,000 ($96,153) and planned to give one to his wife and use the rest for business and personal use.
