Granny shreds million-euro fortune 'to stop her heirs getting it'

A grandmother who it's been reported didn't want any of her financial fortune to go to her family heirs cut all of her money up instead.

The unnamed 85-year-old, who recently passed away in a nursing home, left all of her savings , of £715,000 - just shy of €1 million - behind.

But when her room was cleared, the €950,000 in notes, as well as a variety of savings accounts books with six-figure sums, were found destroyed in the Austrian's bed.

State prosecutor Erich Habitzl confirmed the money had been found and said nothing could be done for the relatives, according to Kurier .

"The damage of the money in the woman's property is not a criminal matter, so we have not begun any investigation," Habitzl told AFP.

Kurier reported however that central bank OeNB says it will replace all the cash.

Friedrich Hammerschmidt of the bank said: "If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced.

"If we didn't pay out the money then we would be punishing the wrong people."

So, two things pop to mind…

By replacing the money, the authorities are going against the old ladies’ wishes…

Secondly, here in the GCC and bank note slightly out of kilter is refused by shops , baqalas – yet it seems that it shouldn’t be if it can be clearly seen as being genuine

What say YOU ?

acchabaccha: Let's not get into an East / West debate again. You will agree that societies in the East are changing and "Old Peoples' Homes" are now springing up in India / Pakistan etc.

My point was that surely the authorities are going against the wishes of the deceasd.

It's true that by replacing the money the authorities will be going against the old ladies' wishes. Possibly, the old lady thought that her relatives did not have "genuine" love or respect for her and left her in nursing home. It was intelligent of her not to let them know of the money she had with her otherwise she would have got much of "that" artificial love and respect. That appears to be one of the major differences between the cultures of the East and the West. In the East, the younger generation takes scare of the parents till their last day in this world and in fact the older generation gets the respect they deserve. In the West, the older people become a burden on the family and are placed in "old peoples homes" and in "nurseries" left to "count" each day of their remaining lives, with possibly just a single visit from their offspring during Christmas.
