Woman dies after jilted suitor douses her in petrol and sets her ablaze
Sonia Bibi, 20, suffered serious burns over 45 to 50 per cent of her body after her former boyfriend, Latif Ahmed, allegedly attacked her in the Multan district, in the central Punjab province of Pakistan.
Although doctors at the Nishtar hospital thought they would be able to save the woman, Ms Bibi’s wounds had become infected and she died overnight, AFP reported on Tuesday
It is believed she was attacked after she refused to marry Mr Ahmed.
She is the latest casualty in a country where approximately 1,000 women were murdered last year alone. International aid organisations and charities suspect this figure may dramatically underrepresent the true cost as many so-called “honour killings” are never reported.
What makes people carry out such crimes. The worst thing is that nothing has been reported about catching or prosecuting the murderer.

Ask any innocent civilian victim how the criminal behaves , ask any criminal how the police behave ........ ask any police how the politicians behave ............ learn from any politician how to deal with the street public ......... ........ one will know the truth .............
MM: A valid point. We turn a blind eye to such things because it does not directly affect us. Everyone needs to stand up and say Enough - This is wrong and against all moral values.

Britexpat: Agreed. As I stated my earlier post, the feudal and tribal system that continues even to this day in the east, is among the main reasons behind such murders. The powerful feudal landlords do not allow the police to register such cases and many do not even get reported. Behind the screen, there is much more than what gets reported in the media.
acchabaccha: I would agree that murder does take place in the West - related to marital / relationship issues etc. However, Honour killings are more cultural - yes based on lack of education mostly. Honour killings in the West have risen since the arrival of immagrants from mainly eastern nations.
The issue in this case is that society and especially the police seem to accept it as something that occurs and do not take steps to prosecute the murderer
“Honor crimes” stem from “a desire to control the behavior of women and girls within a society.” In patriarchal societies, women often bear the burden of a family’s honour. In the east, “honor crimes” are a result of several factors. Lack of education, and cultural, ethnic or tribal values are to name a few. Add to it the corrupt police force, the feudal system inherited from colonial rulers, the pathetically slow judicial system, and the problem multiplies.
Having said that, honour killings do not take place in just the eastern part of the world. When honour killings occur in the West, many people including the police, shy away from calling it honour killings. “Marital post-battering or femicide” are some of the sugar-coated words used to describe such an incident.
In 2002 and gain in 2004, the UN brought a resolution to end honour killings and other honour-related crimes. In the 2004 meeting in The Hague, the rising tide of honour killings in Europe was discussed.
As such the issue is of global nature and not confined to a particular part of the world or to any particular country for that matter.
From where an innocent born soul gets the idea to punish somebody else in that kind of way ?
