Ministry says traffic diversions should be limited to off-peak hours

Traffic diversions should be done only at night to help curb accidents, says the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics.

And roundabouts should have as many lanes as the roads connecting to them. For example, if a three-lane road is connecting to a roundabout, there should be three lanes around the roundabout, the ministry said.

It called on authorities to build pedestrian flyovers or foot over-bridges to avoid mishaps. The ministry has made these recommendations as part of a study titled 'Traffic Accidents in 2014'.

The ministry said the study aimed to suggest to the government ways to curb accidents and improve road safety.

It said the curriculum and equipment of the driving schools should be fully controlled and monitored by authorities. There is also the need to raise awareness among trainers. And road designers must be told about accidents happening on particular roads.

The ministry also asked the Meteorology Department to inform motorists through SMS in case there are weather changes likely to affect visibility and driving.

The local media has been urged to raise awareness about road safety. The ministry also called for the setting up of a road research institute. [The Peninsula]

There are no incentives to follow the rules. If you violate them you pay and drive on. Jail and confiscation of the car would be appropriate measures.

All of these recommendations have been made previously by posters here on QL and Doha News and other forums. I know I've done so since 2010. So I won't hold my breathe that they'll be implemented in any meaningful way anytime soon.

Great idea. So how do you set up the diversion in such a short period of time. Do the work and then clear by the next morning ?

Will overtime be paid to the workers ?
