I planned to go to Doha next year in January to attend a symposium taken place in Grand Hyatt Hotels & resorts. I could not afford to stay in Grand Hyatt so I plan to rent a hotel room somewhere and take bus to the conference in Grand Hyatt. Can you suggest me which hotels I should rent that is near the bus station? And which bus number I could take to go directly either to or near to Grand Hyatt. Thank you in advance.

There are basically two types of public transport available in Qatar. One is the Karwa bus service. As in other countries, these buses have their routes and cover most part of Doha. They have services even outside Doha. To use the Karwa bus service, you will need to purchase a "smartcard" from the main bus station. The first time you purchase the card, you need to pay a minimum QR 30 in which the issuing cost is QR 20 and the balance QR 10 you could use for travelling from one destination to another. You may even buy a smartcard for say QR 50 the first time and this would leave you a balance of QR 30 in your card. You can top up these cards with a minimum payment of QR 10 and this can be done both at the bus station and also at the several designated outlets in the city. You may need to present either your passport or your Qatar ID if you have one, at the time of purchasing the card the first time. The maxim fare is QR 3 while the minimum is QR 2.50. Anytime, you need to board a Karwa bus, you must swipe the smartcard at the time of boarding the bus and likewise swipe it again when you get off. This would also show you the balance remaining in your card. In the absence of a smartcard, you can pay the driver QR 10 and he will hand a you a smartcard which is good for just one more trip within 24 hours from the first time it gets swiped. The other form of public transport are the taxis. The taxis which green-coloured have meters installed in them. They will on their meters once they are hired and you can also demand a receipt from them for your payment of the journey if you wish to. There are other private taxis operating in the city and they are also legal. They usually display a sticker saying "limousine" on their doors. But with them you need to negotiate the cost of your journey before you board any of them. Should you need any additional guidance, QLers will help you out
