Qataris will get subsidies on mutton during Ramadan
The Ministry of Economy and Commerce has announced it will sell sheep from Arab countries, including the locally-bred, and those from Jordan and Syria at subsidized rates to Qatari citizens during Ramadan.
The ministry provides these sheep at lower than prevailing market prices to citizens during the fasting month every year citing increasing demand, particularly in the local community.
Syrian mutton is expensive and a hot favourite of Qataris and since its supplies were affected a bit due to the ongoing problem in Syria, Jordanian sheep were favoured by some.
Arab-origin sheep will begin to be sold to nationals four days before the start of Ramadan (expected by the middle of this month) until the end of the month, Qatar News Agency reports. The sheep will be priced between QR850 and QR950 per head.
The government has asked Widam, Qatar Meat and Livestock Company, formerly known as Mawashi, to import 30,000 sheep of Arab origin.
The ministry said the subsidy to help nationals reduce their expenses during the fasting month. Buyers will have to produce their ID cards to access subsidised sheep from Widam and wouldn't be allowed to carry one live.
Subsidised sheep bought must be slaughtered by a Widam abattoir and only its meat can be carried to prevent misuse, QNA said. So buyers will have to pay QR16 as slaughter charges and QR34 as porter's fee.
Widam will set up air-conditioned tents at the central market in Doha and its abattoirs in Al Khor, Al Shamal and in Al Mazrooah (Umm Salal) to serve as luxury waiting areas for Qatari buyers.
The ministry said it will mount vigil at outlets across the country during the holy month to prevent irregularities and ensure consumers enjoy the needed protection. [The Peninsula]
Wild Turkey - you seem to have issues with anything & everything that happens in Qatar. If the government wants to subsidize prices of goods/commodities for the nationals, so be it!
I suggest you consider moving to Europe or any other country of your choice where you won't be asked to show your ID to buy meat
"Governments all over the world subsidise expenses for their citizens, and non-citizens are generally excluded from these subsidies..."
That's wrong. If you go in a shop in Europe you pay the price shown, you don't have to show your ID!
More governments should follow this lead
I don't see what the issue is - the government is subsidising meat for their citizens, which are around 300,000 people out of the 2million+ population in the country. It would be a much higher cost to subsidise meat for all 2million people.
Governments all over the world subsidise expenses for their citizens, and non-citizens are generally excluded from these subsidies...
Let them get all the provision but i have noticed 10 out of 10 times they throw in dustbin more than 50% of food. This is not Islam and neither it's proven from Prophet life style.
Marwan it seems that you did not read well the article. .. it says lowering the price of (Syrian and Arabic muttons ) and I asure you that expensive meet is in no way possible served in Ramadan tents it's only inside the Mejlis on the big feasts of "matbous" . However I salute the Qataris for the incredible effort they make in Ramadan to host workers and the needy and provide Iftar for them it just an amazing act of good deeds.
Wunae, hhhhh well said .. to be fair by today's standards you can not blame a country for promoting the luxury of it's so called "citizens" .
Marwan: I stand corrected
Good point BritExpat. But actually that is not the prime reason. The biggest reason for this move to allow Qataris to save a bit of money they who spend in ramadan setting up iftar tents. I personally know more than a dozen who set up these tents outside their houses or majlis for all 30 days of Ramadan and offer free fatoor/iftar to the needy every single day.
I know because i have many times eaten at these majlis myself and let me tell you, it is always a great spread where not a single grain of rice of shred of mutton gets wasted. So before you all start whining and moaning about how "the government is making things easier for the Qataris only", look at the actual reason why they are doing so. It is to promote more and more Qataris to spend their monies on charity efforts such as these iftar tents.

The prime reason is that the government is helping its own citizens and making their life easier - Kudos
Also, if expats got the same deal , most would Probably sell the meat for a profit and pocket the money - wouldn't they ?
Not at Rizks' Emporium :0(
techn, Ramadan is the time of opulent dinners after sunset.
Relax simed1. It's not as if the expat muslims waiting for their mutton will have to watch the Qataris getting cheap mutton. According to this article, the Qataris will be lucky enough to sit in luxury VIP majlis tents as they wait for their discount meat. Meanwhile the expats will be standing out in the sun.
I'm gonna be fasting in Ramadan.
poor expats they always get stripped of while others get all the discounts, . it's the economy of the twenty first century Muslims are no more a one united Nation every little piece of land monopolize it's goods.
Peninsula will publish tomorrow "Qataris will get subsidies on chicken, fish and veggies during Ramadan" since expats are richer than Qataris...
nice one Rizks...
Expats, be happy with chicken, fish or Veggies ! :)
I thought the consumption of meat will reduce during fasting . How does the expenses increase as stated?
what about the expats
A wise move and a timely reminder to many expats
all are equal, but some are more equal. No discimination here :)
What do you think?
Only for Qataris what about other nationalities?
