Foreign currency at Al Jazeera Exchange, Al Sadd

By aaa999

Anyone had this same experience like mine? Went to buy Turkish Liras at Al Jazeera Exchange in Al Sadd earlier this month. Rate was 1.7 (TL 1200=QR2040). Bought some stuff in Istanbul with my visa card. On return to Doha, my bank statement showed a rate of 1.39!! That's almost QR400 difference! I would have thought the difference would be 0.1 maximum, not 0.3. Called them up and all they said was, "well, that's our rate; the banks would be different". Honestly felt I was cheated and it was a rip off!!

Money exchange is a form of business. Al Jazeera Exchange or any other money changer for that matter, are all in the market to make money. No one forces anybody to do business with any particular money changer. Everyone has the freedom to choose. aaa999 could have checked the rates at other money exchanges or at banks and he had the freedom to do so before he approached AlJazeera. I cannot see where AlJazeera Exchange went wrong in charging a higher rate. aaa999 simply took a wrong decision for which he should blame himself and not the money changer.

if you try to buy hard currency locally , there is the chance of not getting better rates.

except in the case of $ and may be EURO

Take the same service from the bank from Qatar see what is the rate they are offering.

He didn't say bank ripped him off, it was Al Jazeera who ripped him off with high rates.

Its always better to check www.xe.com/ucc or something similar before going to any exchange here in Qatar.

Correct, banks always rip you off. I would consider NOT to use any bank services.
