Twelve Sri Lankans who were arrested by Qatar authorities for protesting after a fire broke out at a labour camp in Al Sailiya in Qatar have been blacklisted.

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment confirmed that the government of Qatar will deport the Sri Lankans.

A fire that broke out in a labor camp in Al Sailiya on the 8th of May left approximately 300 Sri Lankans homeless. They were provided with temporary lodging after the fire.

The Deputy General Manager Mangala Randeniya stated that a group of workers staged a protest in their company, even after the Qatar government provided them with necessary housing facilities following the fire which erupted in their camp.

Following the protests, the Qatar police arrested the group of Sri Lankan workers and asked their employers to take measures to deport them to Sri Lanka.

Reason for protest

A Sri Lankan worker in Qatar said that when the fire broke out they were told that they will be provided with accommodation and that they would be sent back to the country after ten days.

According to a group of Sri Lankans, all their belongings had burnt to ashes and the authorities have not provided them with any form of compensation.

They also pointed out that there were a large number of Sri Lankans whose visas had expired and claimed that they needed to be brought to Sri Lanka soon. [News First and Hiru News]

Good Lord! Humans are compared to Houseflies now?! Jeez!! If you can pack your bags and stay for a week in on the so-called "accommodation", then that will be a revelation. Forget staying, just a drive-by one of the accommodations make me feel so sad.

I think something is wrong somewhere, with the reasons given above those guys should not be deported; rather appropriate authority should look into matter and provide appropriate solution.

this may not be apropos, authorities should visit all these so called camps, especially Sailiya, man feeling pity, its poorly managed land fill area with full of plastic wastes on surface, lake of waste water, untidy surroundings, and many. (I am thanking God for all the blessings)

The company should be made to compensate the workers for their losses.

How was the fire started ?

Have the management been held accountable
