Health inspectors launched an extensive campaign on Al Meera following complaints that the supermarket sold rotten meat to consumers, The Peninsula reports.

The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) said yesterday that it had inspected the meat section at all branches of Al Meera Consumer Goods Company following the report.

The video showed a clear change in the colour of the meet claiming that it was bought from one of the Al Meera branches in Al Rayyan.

A number of slaughterhouses were also inspected to detect the source of the rotten meat. Samples have been taken for laboratory tests and results will be announced in three days, SCH said in a statement.

The investigation has been conducted under instructions of the Minister of Public Health H E Abdullah bin Khalid Al Qahtani who has also asked to make the results public, added the statement. The SCH said that the change in the colour of the meat indicates that it was damaged. The colour would change if the meat is kept for a long time out of the refrigerator.

The ministry urged the public to inform the authorities concerned if they come across any suspicious cases so that the latter can take the required measures.

"The SCH will not tolerate any violation of the law," said the statement.

Meanwhile, quoting sources from the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, a local Arabic daily reported that an expert team from the Al Rayyan Municipality inspected the meat section at the Umm Al Daum branch of Al Meera and other branches following the report.

All the meat at the outlets was found safe for human consumption, said the daily. [The Peninsula]
