Just escape from this cop film!
Nana Patekar is known as the Samuel L Jackson of Indian cinema for a few reasons. He’s gritty, he never smiles, and when he starts shooting, it’s better for villains to just lie down and kiss their worthless lives goodbye. I adore his powerhouse movies.
However, I’m not a big fan of Bollywood sequels, even if it stars the great Nana himself. They simply try too hard to recreate the original’s magic and ends up completely losing the plot. I’d hoped and prayed I was proved wrong this time, but no such luck there.
The sequel is unapologetically and stylishly violent, but there is only so much running and shooting one can take in a single movie. Nana runs, Nana shoots, Nana kills, rinse and repeat. That’s Ab Tak Chhappan 2 for you.
He plays the role of trigger-happy police officer Sadhu Aghashe, an encounter specialist who kills bad men just like swatting away pesky flies. He’s been on a break, owing to his wife’s murder, but is soon back with a vengeance.
How he rids Mumbai city of the ‘scum of the earth’ forms the rest of the story. Trust me, it’s not too entertaining.
If the original had a genius named Shimit Amin at the helm, the sequel is directed by Aejaz Gulab, who made a name for himself co-ordinating stunt sequences for movies. A good stunt master doth not make a good director.
The script lags most of the time and one can easily predict the next scene without much brow furrowing. I’m clueless as to why Nana agreed to make a comeback for this half-cooked attempt of a movie. My guesses would be...
(A) He had a gun to his head
(B) At 64, he missed his daily runs around Mumbai shouting ‘bang bang’
(C) Nobody else wanted him.
On the original movie’s promotional posters, the Hindi name was translated and superimposed as ‘56 and counting.’ Sadly, there were only about 50 people less to catch the sequel’s last show for the day.
VERDICT: Someone shouldstart a crowd-sourced GoFundMe campaign to get a good movie going for Nana. He looks so terribly lost in this abomination. Four out of 10 stars.
Hello Gasoline, thanks for stopping by. According to me, three reasons, in no particular order, are...
A) both thrive on intense, character driven roles.
B) Both have an affinity towards depicting cops/law official roles on screen.
C) both are highly respected actors, with their filmography dating back decades and they've played similar roles a lot.
Hence, I qualify my statement. Over to you.
"Nana Patekar is known as the Samuel L Jackson"
Give me three examples why?
