Hunters in Qatar shooting birds just for thrills

Some birdwatchers have voiced concern over indiscriminate shooting of birds by hunters for the sake of cheap thrill in Sailiyah, a famous birding site in Qatar.

Located around 20km west of Doha, the area has been a favourite spot for photographers and birdwatchers who come to see abundant species of birds, but lately has become a favourite site for hunters who have turned to shooting birds as a new hobby.

"I have seen carcasses of birds scattered in the place in the last three months," a birding enthusiast who has been a frequent visitor to the area told this daily.

A visit by this reporter to the area revealed a heartbreaking scene as dozens of birds, mostly cormorants, were spotted lifeless, floating in the pond or left rotting on the ground.

The remains of the birds reveal the extent and span of hunting in the area.

There are at least five ‘Important Bird Areas’ in the country, including Al Dhakhira mangrove area in the northeast, Al Alyah Island, Sharawh Island, Al Shat Island, all off the eastern coast, and Khor Al Udaid. [Read more on The Peninsula]

I recently heard from a ornithologist friend when they were bird watching at this place last Friday early morning, they saw a group of youngsters hunting birds and left to die in the pond.... They were all disappointed to see this shocking incident..... since most of these birds are migratory and rare birds to Qatar...

According to a Hadith of our Prophet (peace be upon him), a woman would go to the heaven just because she pulled up water from a well using her shoes to give to a thirsty dog.

The Prophet also told his Companions that “there is reward for any living being”, meaning that Almighty God will reward anyone who is kind and generous not only to human beings but also to animals.

God has instilled in us the instincts of mercy and kindness. We should therefore be kind and merciful to animals and other living creatures instead of killing them in this brutal manner.

Why do the animal killers do this? Why do they enjoy seeing animals in pain? Why do they torture animals and enjoy their slow and painful death?

The animal torturers should be brought to justice immediately. They should not only be punished according to the law but also named and shamed.

The trials of the animal killers and torturers should be open to the public to attend. The criminals should receive harsh punishments so that others will be deterred.

Unfortunately we see some children torturing small animals and birds. It is as if these children are taking vengeance or emptying the physical abuse they themselves have received from their parents on the poor animals and birds.

These children should be rehabilitated and brought up to be kind to animals, who are our living companions on this earth.

Regretfully, we do not reinforce the positive values and behaviors of our children either at home, school or through education syllabuses. We should inculcate in them the values of being nice to animals, which are weak and helpless creatures.

If the anybody cannot love or take good care of the animals, they should at least not kill or torture them.

Also remember “This animal is a God’s creation and its torture is a violation of the Islamic teachings,” . “Islam recommends merciful treatment of animals.”

It is not permissible to hunt and kill any animal which is not a pest or harmful to man or his property, for the sake of pleasure .
