Authorities raid partitioned accommodation in Madinat Khalifa

Authorities raid partitioned accommodation in Madinat Khalifa

QatarNews
By QatarNews

In a major crackdown, the authorities recently zeroed in on a partitioned house in South Madinat Khalifa that was used for accommodating large number of labourers and single workers.

The Ministry of Interior had announced earlier that it was illegal to partition a residential unit without the permission of the concerned municipality.

The house was originally hired by a restaurant owner for accommodating his employees but it turned out that the facility was being rented out to workers from other companies as well.

Representatives from the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs took part in the raid that came in response to repeated complaints from the residents of the area.

Mohammed Shaheen Al Ateeq, a member of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) representing the area, also accompanied the team.

The raid was part of an ongoing campaign to implement the law banning labour accommodations in residential areas.

The house, which has the capacity of a maximum nine people was being used to accommodate about 45 workers. Six types of violations were detected at the facility.

The house which originally had three or four small rooms were divided into more rooms having wooden walls which also involves a clear violation of the law that bans partitioning houses illegally.

The inspection team also checked two other houses in the area that were being used as labour accommodations to make sure whether they had complied with warnings issued by the authorities earlier.

I rent my villa and am willy to pay for the right to stay in a residential area. It is unacceptable that a month later 45 workers moved in next door. I do not choose to live in a labour camp. Aside from the loss of privacy, the rubbish that started building up on the sidewalk which spilled into my driveway, the rubbish being thrown over the wall into my courtyard and the ridiculous noise levels when they all decide to make noise at the same time,,, lets think about the health, fire and safety hazards. They had electrical extention cables running all over the house. At one stage I counted 32 cables just from the outside buildings going in through windows on the top floor. They surely didn't have enough toilet/bathroom facilities for that many people. They had a little wood shack in the front acting as a kitchen. (Who knows what they did with the actual kitchen at the back of the villa) And then just because they can, they took up making fire on the paving between all the shacks they erected, so they can make extra food. Every time we go out into our garden, we have a full crowd staring into our yard. Forget about using my own pool, in my own PRIVATE garden. They took up sitting on the roof of their villa/labour camp, every time we got close to the pool. As a woman, I find it unacceptable and yes, I complained and they are gone. I am not responsible as to where they went. If they ended up on the street, there is clearly a law needed to keep companies from putting their workers in that position in the first place. Not my problem. I pay for my privacy, now I can enjoy it again.

It's the safest measure the Qatar government has done. When tenants partition villas, they usually add or re-route the plumbing in the interior and exterior of the wall to attach a kitchen sink or washing machine. As a result, the unskilled construction (water pressure, pipe angles, or wrong valves, etc.), causes damage to the entire villa. For instance, you will find the second floor of the villa leaking to the first floor. As a result, the electrical starts to spark and causes fires. The 2nd floor room is not safe guarded with tile to handle people cooking with oil and using gas tanks. With too many occupants the plumbing gets too expensive to restore, so you will find usually a bunch of Indians filling large water bottles from the outside faucet of the Qatari homes and taking a shower in the bushes and bringing it back to their villa as drinking water. For families to be exposed to an environment is unsuitable. Sometimes you will find the security guard taking a shower in the swimming pool or using the club house restroom everyday because they sublease their small apartment to 10 other laborers at night. If one of them looser their job, the unthinkable will occur to families.

Let's all just remember why the bachelors are being kicked out of the family areas:

http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/qatar/qatar-foreign-state-employees-seek-solution-for-relocation-dilemma-1.958077

Qatari authorities made the decision to move out bachelors from residential areas after Qatari nationals have repeatedly complained about "lack of respect from expatriate bachelors for local values and traditions and menaces to the Qatari way of life" and called to relocate them in specifically designated areas.

By Galinda• 1 Jun 2014 15:10
Galinda

I'm not following 'the crowd'. I'm following THE LAW. I don't care whether it's right or wrong, it the law of this country, and the law must be respected. Besides, the original deadline for bachelors to leave family areas was November 1, 2011. That's over 2 1/2 years ago, and these companies have been ignoring the law and pretending that they are too important to follow the rules.

Sameeh: You might "believe any body should be allowed to stay with full freedom where ever they want" but in Qatar it's ILLEGAL for bachelors to live in family areas.

By sameeh iftikhar• 1 Jun 2014 13:46
sameeh iftikhar

sometimes when people talk here i feel like either they have never lived in a city before or maybe the boring slump here has dumbed everyone to believe what ever any body mentions is right . I believe any body should be allowed to stay with full freedom where ever they want and its not something new to this world so Mr Khan naveed next time when you move to a new place make sure there arent many pathans in that area if they bother you just because u dont feel comfortable u cant move 1000 people to another location . And like qatar has enough places where people can stay .

It doesn't seem to me that the 45 workers living there did anything wrong. The fault is with their company. But it will be these workers, low paid Asians, who will suffer, and the manager of the company who made this decision will be sleeping in his 5 bedroom villa tonight.
