Lunch with Gibo
Last week, some entertainment writers were invited to have lunch with Presidential candidate Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro, Jr, at Kimpura, a Japanese restaurant in Greenhills.
Among those who came for the rare chance to meet Gibo on an up-close-and-personal manner were Eugene Asis (People’s Journal), Shirley Pizarro (Manila Bulletin), Ivy Lisa Mendoza (Manila Bulletin), Gerard Ramos (Business Mirror), Mario Hernando (Malaya), Nestor Cuartero (Tempo), Ian Fariñas (People’s Tonight), Wilson Lee Flores (Philippine Star and S Magazine) and myself for Manila Standard Today.
The lunch was very casual. He had a bowl of noodles (apparently his favorite in the restaurant) after a morning in Valenzuela City where he spoke to the students of OLFU (Our Lady of Fatima University).
The writers were seemingly awed by the candidate’s affable ways. A six-foot tall guy with broad shoulders, he could hardly get himself into the depressed part of the tatami room to squeeze himself among the writers, but he did, removing the settee meant for him.
He engaged the writers to a quick banter almost about everything under the sun, including the entertainm ent industry, to which he said, he had very little knowledge and should he be elected would ask the help of people who have better understanding of the problems of the industry.
He even answered personal questions, like why his name had never been linked to a starlet or bold star (unlike some candidates), to which he simply said that there is no need for an extra-marital activities. (Gibo is married to Monica Prieto and they have one son, Jaime Gilberto).
After lunch everyone wanted to have a photo taken with Gibo. The other guests in the restaurant scrambled to the tatami room for a shot with their digital cameras.
Now, I understand why the conversion rate for Gibo is high. He is making himself very accessible to everyone, including those who say they will vote for someone else.
