Plans underway for Doha's Sharq Crossing

The construction of Doha’s Sharq Crossing is to get underway in 2015, five years after Santiago Calatrava initially floated plans for the project, government officials announced. 

The fluid design is part of a twelve kilometer series of connections, comprising three bridges linked by tunnels below the sea’s surface, designboom.com reported. 

In addition to providing links between the new (yet-to-be opened) Hamad International Airport, Katara Cultural Village and West Bay, the scheme also incorporates vibrant areas of recreation. 

An elevated walkway leads to a public park offering panoramic views across the corniche.

The multi-billion dollar scheme will alleviate traffic flow problems within Doha, a consequence of the city’s increase in population and car ownership.

Visible from across the bay, the much needed piece of infrastructure will form a bold and dynamic addition to the city’s waterfront skyline.

Doha’s Sharq Crossing is scheduled to be completed by 2021.
