QU's President's speech causes anger among some Qatari's

After a speech given by Qatar University (QU) President Dr. Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad about efforts to transform the country’s national university, many of her fellow Qatari citizens did not accept her statement well.

In the speech, Dr. Al Misnad spoke about the obstacles that needed to be tackled to transofrm the system and raise the standards of the university and positively change the repuation of the university since she took over in 2003. The speech was given in Canada at Dalhousie University, where she says:

"When I became president, the university was very traditional. It was treated as a government department. There were lots of issues with it. It would have been easier to build a new university, than work with the one that existed."

One of the more controversial changes that were implemented was raising of the required gradepoint average for graduation, from 1.5 to 2.0 out of a 4.0 scale. That roughly translates into an increase in the minimum standard from a D+/C- average to a C. Due to this increase of requirements, many students were not able to meet the bar and as a result about "1,000 students" were asked to leave the institution.

Several Qatari's expressed their anger and insult over social media networks such as Twitter, while some actually agree with her remarks.

So, is this the painful truth or was insult added to injury?
