Evolution of Doha
Qatar's econcomic boom over the past decade is clearly undedniable.
The discovery of large reserves of gas and oil have transformed this tiny peninsula from a small fishing village to a leading financial metropolis, both in the in the MENA region and internationally.
Qatar's wealth has brought in several changes, specifically in terms of infrastructure, social structure, population growth, and education.
In an effort to document its continuing growth, Qatar Univeristy (QU) will be launching a new book that will explore the evolution of Doha. 'Demystifying Doha: On Architecture and Urbanism in an Emerging City' by Dr. Ashraf Salama; QU professor of architecture and the chair of the department of architecture and urban planning (DAUP); and Dr. Florian Wiedmann who is a research fellow at the department. The book was published this month by Ashgate Publishing, UK.
The book is composed of 276 pages that illustrates pre-oil Doha, along with its tribal tradiations, its realiant relationship with the sea, and it's dramatic urban progression.
The book continues to discuss Qatar's further visions for the future in terms of urbanisation.
In addition to portraying the positive aspects of Doha's evolution, the book also acknowledges the economic consequences and potential environmental challenges, and provides an outlook of sustainable urbanism in Doha.
The authors conclude with a theoretical discourse on space production and an analytical framework for investigating the production of urban qualities in the city.
