Brand new car or secondhand car

Pleasant afternoon!

Would like to get your opinions and suggestions with regard to buying a car in Doha.
Which do you think is more practical, buying a brand new car or getting a second-hand one?
By the way, we are just looking into buying a sedan type like toyota corolla, chevrolet cruze and the likes of it. If you have suggestions as to a prospective car model, please feel free to tell me.

We were decided before to buy a brand new car but when my husband spoke to some of his collegues, he was advised otherwise.
Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

I have to suggestion you new car is better then second hand cause of no trust in second hand because much matter involves in second hand and may be second hand car any thief already get or much such kind of matters. Recommended new car always. Driving instructors Leeds

Hi all!

Budget will be the going rate close to that of a Toyota Corolla. I cannot give specific amount as I do not know the price of a Corolla in Qatar yet. We are considering a sedan type model, no 4x4. :)

If you have a choice between new and second-hand, why would you even consider the latter?

New car for people with good money in hand and no time to spent on roaming and searching around many available cars. Second hand cars needs lot of patience, check repair history etc.

Even Honda and Nissan Tida are good cars in terms of reasonable maintenance cost and resale value

Thank you all for your detailed responses. We will consider what you have mentioned. I agree that a seond-hand car that has an acceptable mileage and accident free makes a somewhat better option. But we'll still weigh the pros and cons.

Now if I may till ask as follow up question, which second-hand car models are best to purchase?

We used to own a KIA Cerato, single owner, accident-free but we were able to sell it at a really low resale price. It was used for 6 years. Only problem, as with other KIA models, was the aircon not being able to fight the heat off (during summer especially).

We have Toyota on top of our list as its ac units are tried and tested to put off the high temp in the mid east. What bout other brands like chevrolet, nissan etc...?

this is a give and take situation, the less you pay for a second hand car the higher the risk, vice versa, the more you pay for a brand new, the less is the risk.

So brand new is good and so is second hand. I own a 2 years old car doing already 30,000 but it feels like brand new. The interior is as new as I bought it.

So check maintenance record, make sure it is accident free and find out also servicing costs, check the car in and out yourself. Don't forget to check the suspension and undercarriage. All these checking is easy, just drive to any workshop when you view the car, and pay QR20 to the foreman to ask him to just check the car.

However, again it depends on your budget first and what kind of car you're comfortable with.

I would also say the same a new car is much better than a second hand unless it is a very good one, less mileage, no accident, ladies driven etc,

I will advise you as follow

if 5 to 25 thousand Qatari riyal is not material money for you buy a brand new.

Otherwise look out for second hand car with following

a) between 1 to 20 thousand KM mileage

b) full service history if German car they will also have warranty

c) no accident history (this can be identified at inspection place)

Typically one or two year old car as long meets above criteria almost equal to new car except you do not get to remove plastic from seat covers.

I had bought pajero at 19 KM 5 years back and saved 30 K Qatari riyals.

After 5 years the car is still excellent, the only think i do is do service on time.

Hope this help.

PM me if you need more specific info.

but if know someone personally selling his/her 3-4 years old car, in almost half the original price, go for it.

My suggestion will be strictly buy a new brand car, because me facing lots of headaches after buying second hand car,my suggestion is if its ok with you then you buy a new brand car like KIA Picanto new model or similar which will cost you around 30 to 35 thousand riyals which will be free of tension for many years rather than wasting lots of money on breakdown maintenances for second hand cars with lots of headaches...

Depends on situation...if you have a long term plan to stay in Doha you should go for new car (depends on your budget as well).

You can go for Toyota/Nissan/Mitsubishi/Honda as these cars usually have good re-sale value

If you buy a new car based on a bank loan paying back QR 2.500 per month you'll have peace of mind for three years at least. If you buy a second-hand car you may as well pay QR 2.500 per month on repairs.
