Hi,
My family and I are moving to Qatar in 3 weeks time, and I am wondering whether it is better to purchase a new laptop over here or wait till I arrive in Qatar? Also, what is the internet service like in Qatar re: connectivity, downloading, uploading etc........

Any advice would be greatly aprreciated.

Many thanks

Snowman99... so I will put a spoke in the wheels and disagree with all!!! Maybe these guys have had bad experiences but mine is good. Have bought a sony vaio 2 year ago from Virgin Stores... luckily not having to make use of the warranty... it was cheaper than buying it overseas.. also by the time you arrive there will be many sales for Eid. Pity you aren't here now as they are advertising a lot of specials for Ramadan... Also it is better to buy here for the warranty ... Qatar is not the most customer service driven country!! So if you have a problem with a computer bought overseas they will probably charge you as you did not buy it here.....If you do buy it in the UK make sure the warranty is valid worldwide - I know it is available on Samsung products.. Now we have the fibre optic and we have had noooo problem with internet...( we did when we had adsl) it is not much faster than the adsl but at least we can have 3 or 4 comps linked at the same time.... and they put in a booster upstairs.... most villas are double storey... - QTEL even did the upgrade for FREE.... where else in the world would you get that!!!! We have the Mosaic package... which includes basic tv channel package... you can upgrade to a lot of other channels - PLUS in includes unlimited internet usage for QR250 per month... so go and have a look at the QTEL webpage for more info.. and also OSN which is the extra satellite service. So that is my experience..... hope this helps and hope your move goes well... :)

Many thx guys, much appreciated. I assume that only an adaptor/travel plug type thing is required to run UK electricals?

Agree with everyone else!

Cheaper and a far better selection in the UK aswell..

Try and buy it from a place that participates in the VAT refund scheme and you will be able to get the VAT refunded at the airport so it will be much cheaper!

And yes not sure what the other poster meant? Even with the fibre upgrade the internet is much slower than the UK and about 4 times the price!

Definately buy any electrical item in the UK before you get here.

Internet is absolutely 5h1t. Qtel offer a very basic service which keeps on disconnecting but wont give you any indication when they will upgrade to fibre...Inshallah.

With regards the previous answer comparing fibre in the UK to here then the person must have lived in the outer hebrides as the internet here is not even in the same league as the UK, Fibre or not.

I'd buy it from the UK. Internet speeds here vary depending on the area you live in. They are installing fibre optics and the speed of that is breathtakingly fast, a lot faster than in th UK.
