I need to be in the US on the 10th and the first available appointment is on the 15th. Has anyone ever been in this situation?

You can't ...

If the First Available Slot is 15th then You will have to Delay your Trip...

It will totally depend on the Interviewer, If He accepts or Application or Hold it for Further Processing...

BTW are you applying for B1/B2 Visa?
