In such situations it then becomes a "family secret" and rather than be reported and punished, the perpetration is simply spoken about in a hush hush manner within the family only, and the perpetrator just "ignored" and avoided. Pathetic to say the least and so soul scarring for the children!

The Peninsula article is about empowering doctors to report cases of child abuse that they see, since there are many parents and caregivers who would rather keep it secret to protect the family's privacy.

Imagine being a mother worried about the laborers living in the shared villa up the road, and all the while your husband is doing unspeakable things to your child, but no one will report it?

The rights of the child come above a family's "honor" in my book. If doctors see a child who is likely the victim of sexual/physical abuse, s/he has a moral obligation to report this to the police.

It is human nature. In cases such as these we tend not to believe that this could be happening to our own, especially where family or close friend is concerned..

That's an issue everywhere Fatimah. Parents can sometimes be blind, or not want to admit to themselves that something might be wrong. Especially when its another family member.

I think the only thing that really needs improving here, is awareness that it is happening, and access for parents to brochures, websites, books, etc, that can show them how to talk to their kids about this kind of stuff.

My parents used a book to help teach my brother and I, because they weren't really sure how to start a conversation on what sexual abuse and pedophiles were.

Sadly I think those kinds of resources are lacking here, probably because, by definition of what they are, they might contain graphic sexual pictures or wording.

Also, I think these things do need to be taught in schools as well. Sometimes kids will listen to teachers over parents.

People can be overly protective and careless at the same time when it comes to their kids.

Overly protective cos they fail to provide them with adequate education on sexual related topics and lurking predators, and careless in trusting anyone and everyone being with their kids.

In fact I know of a girl who was abused by a uncle and the saddest thing was her parents chose to keep sending her time and again with this man, never bothering to check why their daughter appeared disturbed by him!

Well, lets hope some parents listen to this. Lets hope that they tell them it isn't just labourers who might hurt them, but family members and friends as well.

I always always advocate this MM. I would rather my child learns about the "birds and bees" and the "demons and beasts" from me than any outside sources. Good on the colonel for promoting parents to doing what they may otherwise consider "unsuitable" and not age appropriate.

Agree Fatimah. I do like this quote from the Colonel:

"Parents must provide adequate and safe information about sex to their children in a way that ensures they can figure out these dangers."

I think that's the first time I've ever heard some from this region advocating any kind of sex education for kids!

And I wonder too, (and this is just me theorizing) that since there really isn't a "black market" for your average, run of the mill "Debbie Does Dubai" style porn, that these guys are forced to get the more hard core, pedophilia, beastiality, necrophilia, snuff film stuff, because that stuff has been regulated to the black market for decades and is more established.

Absolutely. And that's why it always frightens me to see certain neighbors sending out their pretty lil girls, all cutely clad, alone to the shops and to play etc. Surely they are those lulled into a false sense of security or simply ignorant to the dangers lurking around them!

I agree that the existence of such material is worrying. I have found that Expats workers in the Middle East, not having other outlets are prone to watch pornography or drink to excess. This in turn can lead them to other things , such as assault on innocents.

There are some messed up people out there FatihmaH. :( And sadly I think the labour/bachelors here in the ME make a great market for this kind of stuff, because they are so cut off from any healthy interactions with the opposite (or even same!) sex.

Some people do need inspiration and can be influenced! It's not porn itself as a whole that can be blamed, afterall they had the choice to NOT do it, but the fact that such pornographic material(of pedophilia, necrophilia etc) exist is itself worrying.

This is true of only some people. The kind who have this "try everything" approach towards porn and then their actual sexual acts itself. They are not your everyday "men and women only" kind of porn addicts, but those who seek out the more hardcore and illegal viewing. Such people can then progress towards wanting to try them out as well. Bestiality, necrophilia, pedophilia etc are among such acts.

I agree Brit. While there are people who are addicted to pornography, it doesn't make them suddenly want to start molesting children.
