Great Letter in Gulf Times

This made me chuckle:

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A simple solution

Dear Sir,

There have been many letters recently commenting on the need to reduce road accidents in Qatar.
I have thought of a very simply way how this could be achieved - why not insist that all cars in Qatar be fitted with indicator lights at the front and rear of the vehicle as is the practice in the rest of the modern world!
This would then allow the driver, by way of a simple flick (up or down) of a stalk attached to the steering wheel to activate the indicator lights on either the left or right hand side of the car, thereby informing other drivers of their intention to turn left or right.
This has proved to be invaluable in reducing accidents the world over especially when approaching roundabouts, junctions, overtaking, etc.
Some cars appear to have this function but maybe the drivers are unsure of their use as it seems that the only one working is the “flashing headlight” mode to indicate that you are two feet from the car in front and that you need to be somewhere really quickly therefore the speed limit does not apply.
Food for thought, anyway.

Crystal Balls should be standard equipment in all cars driving in Qatar.

on a serious note, while driving u should be visible and predictable;

VISIBLE: make sure others (cars/pedestrian/cyclist) can see u: lights, signals, horn, flashers. if u surprise them or if they didn't notice u they'll have not enough time to react, avoid or comply.

PREVISIBLE: let others read ur mind!! they MUST know what are ur intentions are, to react accordingly.

and it works the other way round: be ALERT and look for others (mirrors, concentration, not be distracted), and try to PREDICT and read others minds and intentions so u drive accordingly.

dear adey

thank u for ur concern. but are u out of ur mind?

- by signaling we become PREDICTABLE. are u telling us to reveal our true intentions to the ennemy cars on the road?

- by signaling we loose our selfesteem as it will look like begging other cars to give us way, instead of forcing our way threw.

- by signaling we will look "soft" civilised people.

- remember the golden rule: cars around u are ennemies, driving is a fight!
