Prep for moving to Qatar
So, coming from Canada what do I need to do to prep for moving? I am still waiting for details of the package offer e.g. I dont know what kind of healthcare coverage I will get while in Qatar.
First off is there anything that is hard to buy or much more expensive in Qatar that I should purchase before moving? Perhaps a new laptop, sunglasses, etc?
Curious how much is a pack of cigarettes over there? Though I plan to give up smoking :-)
Perhaps the package will include accommodation, perhaps not - if not will it take long to find a one bedroom apartment? What kind of rent would it cost?
Clothes, I'll bring suit, work shirts etc Should I wait to buy casual clothes over there to fit in?
Car - is it hard to lease a car over there given I wouldnt have any credit history?
Any other tips appreciated.
Dear Dshaw,
accommodation is varied in Doha with prices starting at:
- studio/1 bedroom: QR3,500 up to QR12,000 monthly
- 2 bedrooms: QR5,000 up to QR18,000 monthly
With the lowest rental being a very simple, humble accommodation up to very luxurious apartments or townhomes.
Generally rents are cheaper starting from the airport area and will start increasing as you move north towards Westbay and The Pearl.
If you require any further information on accommodation in Doha feel free to email us: marketing/at/ahbqatar/dot/com or call us 44417001
you should live the experience and figure all of these by your self, what seems a nice recidence to some people which is cheap, you might concider trash. Come first, I advice you to stay the first month in a Hotel as i did, and then you can search and look what is good for you.
You have to have a GSM with SIM capability. Dunno about Canada but the US phones generally don't work.

buy it in canada, buy an unlocked phone or an iphone, you will love it!!
What about cell phones - should I wait to get there before getting a new cell phone or will a Canadian one work over there?
buy your clothes, sunglasses, electronics in Canada,(go to Costco if you can) a pack of Marlboro here i heard is like 9qr which is about 3dollars Canadian, also did i mention that a liter of petrol here cost less then a liter of water, gotta love it:)
gadgets here is cheaper than the other country...2nd i dont hav idea coz i didnt smoke :) sorry.....3rd it depends on the compny if they gve u all the privilage u need such as accomodation/housing allowance...4th, clothes...it depends on u or ur work....lastly car....as long as u meet their salary requirement u can lease...
Rent is horribly high. If it's not included I'm not sure I'd come!
