Microsoft documents can be opened and edited using its Apple software counterpart iWorks which consists of Keynote (for MS Powerpoint), Pages (for MS Word) and Numbers (for MS Excel).
You need to download the 3 of them separately from AppStore in your iPad / iPhone.
Your iPad / iPhone must also have iOs version 5 installed (click on Settings-->General--->Software Update... to upgrade your iOs over wifi - takes only 20 minutes)
Also all 3 are not free (USD 4.99 each I think) charged via the credit card you registered in AppStore.
However they are still way cheaper than MS Office for Mac (QR1000 for full version with MS Outlook) and is more spiffy.
Also if you enable iCloud you need only pay for each of them once and all your iphones, iPads and Macs (registered under the same credit card) will automatically have a copy.
And here's the best part - any documents that you have worked on will be automatically saved to the iCloud and reflected on all of your iPads, iPhones and Macs!
