Jaidah Photography Award is it for real?
Many amateur photographers participated in a local photography contest expecting and hoping that we might be rewarded for their creativity and hardworking.
However, the result was so shocking, and the result is completely misleading and out of subject.
First let me put you into the picture and then move towards the results.

Subject: Reflection.
On the website they interpret reflection as reflection of an image on glass of tower or water
They also mentioned that it’s for local photographers, and logically it should be for pictures in Qatar and not North Pole.
Results:
1st award was given for picture of Shadow
3rd award was given for picture of shadow
2nd award does not reflect any sort of reflection, it only shows a butterfly and what’s expected to be reflection, however its not as you will see later in the picture attached.
So the 3 photos which was awarded the prizes none of them has anything to do with reflection. The subject I guess was changed to Shadow or the judges did not base their decision on the subject of the contest.
Or perhaps the judges does not know the difference between the Reflection & Shadows.
So let us define first what Reflection is and what’s Shadow for the judges perhaps we can illuminate them to the truth:
Reflection is the change in direction of a wave at an interface which makes it return to the original
Shadow: An area that is not or is only partially irradiated or illuminated because of the interception of radiation by an opaque object between the area and the source of radiation
So now we know that Shadow and Reflection is a totally different things can any one please explain how come these 3 pictures got the award??? Especially that there was so many nice pictures of reflection in which participated and ignored by judges.
I will leave it to your judging and debate, since many professional photographers agreed with me that non of these pictures as per the description of the contest should win or be in the contest because it reflect different subject.
There is a real competition announced today at Qatar photography committe. But no assurance that it will not be another disappointment contest.

Are there any more competition out there? I am hoping that there is more aside from this awards...
Perhaps the person writing the rules did not communicate them to the judges or perhaps the Arabic to English translation was badly carried out or perhaps..... Hold on , I'm thinking of one :O)
The whole competition management was a mess starting with deviation from the rules, regulations etc. No confirmation email/sms was provided after submitting the entry. When voting started it was noticed that the winning entries were also listed in the list for public voting for the 6th position. Later chief judge himself asked the public not to vote on 2-3 entries after the listing.
I pity myself for taking part in such down the grade competitions. But still congratulations to those winners who really reflected the competition theme.

Well I don't see why my emotions upset or not has anything to do with the subject.
Im discussing a technical point and Emotion has nothing to do with it.

Great idea, But I have a small comment if your going to consider photo contest, people will vote to their friends and family and it will move from photography competition to family and friends competition and results will be similar to the one Qatar Airways got. If was a disaster competition since all the good images was forgotten and images with lots of technical mistakes got the award.
It will be great if you can use pro photographers from Flickr or other sources in order to seek the real experience in photography. After all we just want to feel the competition spirit

I agree with u if the judges picked any picture with reflection subject but non of the three pictures has anything to do with Reflection is shame.
I'm not upset, since my picture got to see the light and get nominated despite I'm just an amature and this is my first experience. But what's making me question this issue is how come the subject was changed totally without a notice.
It's like asking for picture of cars and the winner will be a picture of jet?
There is nothing wrong from seeking the truth, it's not shameful to try to understand the reason behind, it's shame when every one turn their head and walk cursing the organizers knowing from their hurts that it was never a competition!
vmitri77 I am vexed that what would seem to be an esteemed panel should deviate so far from the set theme. I believe the top three should never have been allowed entry into the competition, but hey ho. I will not waste my time entering one of their events again.
At the end of the day the judges decision is final, no amount of ranting by you or I will change what has happened. Of course I was still going to rant, and I have done that now, but I think you will find it best to leave it there.
I have just checked their website again, and still there is nothing there to announce the results and how they were reached. Once again this is something I find very amateurish of such a well resourced competition.
Anyway time to move on. I will be organising a QL photographic competition in the coming months, and QL users will be the judges with an open vote for everyone. I will see if I can find a sponsor for a prize or two but mainly it will be for fun.

and what is the guarantee that the new (if ever) winner will not be questioned?
Move on and learn your lesson. Or better yet, create your own competition and be the judge so you'll know how to be in their shoes. Do you think you will be a fair judge to ALL? And you will satisfy ALL?
Guys since many of us agree that decision was technically wrong then let's escalate this matter to
1- Qatar photograpgic committee and in case we do not receive a proper feedback
2- Ministry of Trade and Commerce. Since the law in Doha states that Mot&C should check the loyalty of the competition
It's the worst decision we can take if we just let go and let them enjoy this play.
All what it takes is a letter to be signed by multiple participants to Qatar photography committee as one of the organizers to be responsible for reversing the decision
And it's a great idea to have QL photo contest so let's start from some where

Who would question a judge discretion? It will always be bias.
Well at least now, you will learn your lesson whether to participate in future undertakings of such by the same entities.

Shocking indeed. I shall not be wasting my time entering this now annual competition again as they seem to have licence to change the rules as they see fit. I am just glad I didn't bother going along to the award night as I would probably have felt the need to vent my spleen to them there and then, and it wouldn't have been pretty.
Also communications were awful, with little to no information being released regarding progress, dates or winners. Even now their website discloses nothing about how the competition turned out.
