Dusty weather to continue for 48 hours
Qatar will continue to experience partly dusty weather in most parts due to the northwesterly winds for the next 48 hours, an official from Qatar Meteorology Department said yesterday.
Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), head of Forecast and Analysis Department Abdulla al-Mannai said, “Qatar is expected to be affected by northwesterly winds. We expect the wind speed to decrease starting Thursday evening, but it will pick up again on Saturday.”
Strong northwesterly winds with speed ranging between 18 and 25 knots, reaching 30 knots at times, will continue to affect the area and the sea state will be 2 – 4 feet on the coast and from 8 – 10 feet offshore.
Asked why Qatar and the nearby region is experiencing unusual weather pattern, al-Mannai said, “It is a seasonal change that occurs at this time. Due to the southwesterly and southeasterly winds the temperature had picked up last week. Then there was a sudden drop in temperature and a warning was issued.
“This drop caused the weather to be dusty due to the winds and visibility reduced to less than 2km. This pattern continued through last Thursday and Friday,” he said.
The wind strength picked up again last Saturday and it shifted to a northwesterly direction, strong at times. This resulted in high seas and compelled the Forecast and Analysis office to issue a warning that was valid from Saturday till today, he said.
Explaining the weather swings, al-Mannai said, “The northwesterly was associated with a cold air mass in the upper air layer which in turn resulted in the drop in temperatures that we have experienced.”
The temperatures are two to three degrees below the average for the period at this time of the year, he said.
The maximum temperature will be between 22 and 25 degrees C, and the minimum between 12 and 15 degrees C.
A warning of strong winds and high seas is in force till today, according to a Meteorology Department report issued yesterday.
