What’s in our tap water?

I find a scale layer forming in my electric kettle after boiling tap water in it and wonder whether anyone could give me some explanation for it. The boiled water also contains suspended particles.
Ever since I have noticed this I clean the bottom of the kettle thoroughly using a scrubber after boiling water each time.
It will be appreciated if any Gulf Times reader could explain the reason for the scale formation and inform if the boiled tap water is safe to drink.
The other day I boiled bottled mineral water and found no scale formation.

Even I have faced the same issue.
I have been forced to filter water again after boiling the same so the residue can be removed.
Anyone of you out there facing the same issue?

And since the tap water is coming from a tank in my garden, which is in the full sun pretty much all day , and this tank has not been cleaned in all the years I have lived here..I rather stick with bottled water.

Jango, thank you for the clarification. I am sure there is nothing wrong with the water but it just does not taste very nice and I am sure it is making my hair fall out.

I am the Plant Manager of a Power and Water Plant

Scaling up of your kettle is fine, its because desalination provides the end user with a slighly harder water which has a little more calcium in it for taste, when you boil it some of this calcium falls out, the particles can either be as explained calcium particles coming off the kettle or dust particles from the pipes.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the tap water, apart from particles picked up in the resevoir or older pipes, just filter it with a cheap filter system, nothing else is required, do not invest in a small ro unit for the house its a waste of money.

Most bottled water in Qatar is from desalinated water with a few extra minerals thrown in to improve the taste, all the water fro plants in this country conform to WHO standards and is continously monitored.

There is absolutly nothing like treated water being added, once the vapour is collected it is passed through a limestone bed to remineralise the water so it tastes good.

Bottling plants arn't at the power plants, they take the water from the mains, just like you do.

Qatar water is as safe as being in any European or North American country

You should not drink Tap water. Boiling water only kills parasites. It does not filter water from other harmful residues not to mention the excess salts and unwanted minerals. Rust within residential pipelines could cause serious problems as well.

Even bottled water would create a layer or salts in electric water kettles. The rate could be slower for the build up though. When you boil water, pure water evaporates leaving salts at the bottom of the boiler. The more you do this, the thicker and more visible those layers become.

No idea..I was under the impression that the bottling units are integral to the desal plants. Incase its otherwise and the supply of water is through similar pipelines, then we are probably consuming the same thing.

Dk, these factories get supplied through a similar pipeline only isnt it? Or do they have some other mechanism with which water is delivered to them?

If you get distilled water as oppsed to mineral water there won't be that much in there. The tap water may be perfectly ok to drink but the taste is not good - may be alright for coffee but for pure drinking it is not.

Also, tap water makes your hair fall out with prolonged exposure (which is applicable to most of us who live here)

yes stealth, desalination through vaporization will produce pure distilled water which is quiet insipid in taste..try tasting the condensed water collected on the inside of the lids. Minerals enhance the taste. I am also told that some re-cycled and treated water is also added to this vaporized water to reduce cost.

So, the difference would be that these bottled water may not have the recycled and treated water mixed into it and as they are bottled in the factories, they cannot pick up any sludge from the distribution lines.

the bottled water that one gets is also treated with minerals. Hence the difference in taste between the brands. Most of them use the same tap water to supply to the residents.

Desalinated water may contain minerals, either deliberately added after vapourization or it could pick up some sludge from the distribution lines. Some minerals are required by our body and thus are not harmful. Other solids, if not required, will be taken out of our body by our immuno-system. The macrophages, a component of blood, will engulf these particles to finally excrete them out.

Unless, the water contains infectious germs like hystolitica antamoeba or e-coli strains of bactreria or excess quantity of sludge, its generally not harmful to a healthy body.

It's a combination of calcium and iron deposits. In fact, it is actually good for you and will not harm you at all. We used to get this in our jug in New Zealand, as our water came from a bore (well).

However, as others have stated, the condition of the pipes, from the source to your tap, are unknown and may contain traces of heavy metals and/or other contaminants.

My advice to you would be to invest in a water-dispenser and buy the five gallon bottles, which are really cheap.

I use to prepare tea/food from the tap water and it's good in taste.

tap water is desalinated water so there are all sorts of things in it, I think it tastes like swimming pool water. better to drink water from a water dispenser. Also tap water makes lousy tea with scum floating in it and the taste is horrendous

Tap water is excellent for drinking at the source, but this water is coming through pipelines to your tap, may those pipelines got problem or issues, ultimately that will make your Tap water safe or unsafe.

primarily tap water if the pipelines are in excellent condition is excellent for drinking
