renewing visa or pay visa penalty

i already finished 1 year out of my 2year contract. i wish to exit the country. my visa expired last december and i submitted resignation last january. company said i need to renew my visa because expired visa cant be cancelled. is that really true? how many months possible to stay here and how much is the visa penalty for staying.

which is much cost effective:
- renew my visa so company can cancel it later
- or pay the visa penalty instead then leave the country

please need help... thank you so much.
