The new car registration plates?

Hi.

A simple question.

I see Qatar is now changing to the new registration plates, with the qatari flag on the left, and the normal numbers in bigger style.

How do I change to these plates? I would like to do that since they look much nicer.
Do I just go to the traffic department with my car or?
Must I wait until my next registration year?

My car model is 2010 (Audi Q5).

thanx!

for renew registration for 2012 you will get the new plate number, so far i know is to wait for them to sms you via Metrash (you need to register at MOI website), then you can go again for the new plate number change.

Other told me just wait for one week then your new plate will be ready, then you can go there without the sms notice.

...the new plates have a built-in infra-red reflector for the benefit of the speed cameras... ( in additon to clearer numbering)...

Annual registration and Insurance is required to check regularly the condition of your vehicle, and advance registration is I doubt to be possible. Since Insurance also requires annually and a compulsory requirement. Better to check with Traffic Department, they may replace your plate only with a certain charges. Otherwise, keep patient, it will come in your due time. You don't know maybe another better color and design will comes later... cheer up!

Maybe you can just re-register your car (again) early, pay the QR100 and get the new plates? Go ask them, if a piece of plastic means that much to you.

By the way - the new plates are free of charge but you have to go back and get them a week later.

I think the change is so that the cops / cameras can read the numbers better too - Although, they seemed to read my old style ones ok the other month at night going 120km/hr

I did ask the Girl in the traffic department today when I renewed my registration but she had no idea why!

Keep your old plate if you're one of the violators of traffic rules!

Also it will be very easy to spot cars with old plates indicating that they have not had an inspection. This should mean a lot of cars being taken off the road within a year.

New plates are so that cameras can read the numbers more reliably.

It's in the newspapers. It will be changed once you renew the istimara, not sooner/later.

zirkwander, are you sure about this? If that is correct, where do I go and pay this? Traffic Department?

I just renewed my registration 2 months ago, so I dont want to wait 10 months before getting these new plates.

I've heard that you can pay QR200 or QR250 if you don't want to wait until your registration renewal to change into the new car plates.

every new vehicle get registerd will get a new bold letterd number plate and for all other vehicles when they go fo annual renewal (Istimara) will get automatically new number plate.

I was told that due rise in expatriates, governament is making new number plates in case of any accident, or for any emergency reason can easily note the numbers compared to old Arabic small numbers,

Don't worry about the model. It can be changed once you will renew your registration.
